This offers greater flexibility and choice, but it also creates a need for clearer information, stronger boundaries and more consistent ways to confirm who is registered.
NRIC has been developed to meet that need. It provides a voluntary registration route for independent carers and a practical way for others to confirm current registration status.
NRIC is intended to support clearer, more informed decisions about independent care.
It is not a directory, matching service or regulator, and it does not remove responsibility from the person or organisation arranging care. Its purpose is to make key registration information visible and checkable, while supporting greater confidence in arrangements that are safe, transparent and sustainable.
In a part of the care sector where people are often working through fragmented information NRIC is designed to offer more consistent and easily accessible understanding of status and care arrangements.
NRIC is being developed to focus on registration and status and support clearer guidance on employment status, care arrangements and regulatory boundaries. So that over time NRIC becomes not only a way to check who is registered, but a steadier point of reference for what independent care registration means.
Born out of personal experience
“When my mum needed care, I experienced first-hand how difficult it could be to understand what information could be relied on and what could not. There was no clear way to distinguish between reassurance and evidence, or to know whether the basic checks you would expect had actually been completed. I found good carers in the end, but the process exposed a gap that should not exist in something as important as care.”
Bridging Technology and Independent Care...
“With a background in technology, I believed there should be a more reliable and practical way to support both independent carers and the people looking for care. NRIC has been developed as an independent, voluntary register to bring greater clarity, consistency and confidence to this part of the care landscape.
The aim is not to over-formalise people’s lives or replace existing judgement, but to make it easier to understand who is registered and what that registration represents.”
